How to Prepare for Professional Carpet Cleaning

To get every penny's worth, a little carpet cleaning preparation goes a long way. The Golden Rule: Vacuum Thoroughly

The absolute most important step is to vacuum your carpets thoroughly before I arrive. Some people think that because a professional is coming with a massive truck-mounted vacuum, they do not need to vacuum beforehand. That is actually a mistake. Vacuuming before carpet cleaning is the foundation of a successful deep clean. A standard household vacuum is designed to remove dry, loose soil from the top layer of your carpet.

If we inject hot water into a carpet full of dry soil, that dirt immediately turns into mud, which makes the deep cleaning process much less efficient. Instead of focusing entirely on extracting oily, deep-down dirt and stubborn spots, the cleaning process has to work twice as hard to flush out loose surface dust and hair. Thorough vacuuming ensures my equipment can focus entirely on deep extraction.

Pick Up Small Items and Breakables

Once you have finished vacuuming, clear the floor of small items. Walk through every room scheduled for cleaning and pick up toys, shoes, loose papers, books, power cords, and clothing. These small obstacles slow down the cleaning process and pose a tripping hazard when carrying heavy hoses. Equally important is protecting your breakables. If you have fragile items sitting on tables in the cleaning zone, please move them to a safe room.

My cleaning hoses are heavy and pressurized, and they must be maneuvered around corners. While I am extremely careful and treat every home with respect, accidents can happen if a hose catches a table. Removing breakables ahead of time gives both of us peace of mind and allows me to work quickly and safely.

What to Do with Furniture

You do not need to lift heavy items.

However, you should move light furniture if you want the carpet beneath them cleaned. Items like floor lamps, plants, trash cans, small side tables, and lightweight accent chairs are easy to carry out of the room. Moving these smaller items to a room that is not being cleaned saves an immense amount of time and allows me to start pre-treating and extracting immediately.

Secure Your Pets

Securing your pets is another crucial part of what to do before cleaning. I love dogs and cats, but a professional carpet cleaning appointment is not a friendly environment for them. My truck-mounted system is loud, and the hum of the vacuum can easily terrify even the calmest pet. Furthermore, the entry door must remain slightly cracked open during the entire process to run hoses from my truck. For their safety, please secure your pets before I arrive.

Note Stains and Problem Areas

Before my truck pulls into your driveway, note any specific stains. If you know what caused a particular spot, that information is gold. A red wine stain requires a completely different treatment than a pet urine spot or an oily grease smudge. When I arrive, we will do a walkthrough together. Point out these problem spots so I can select the perfect specialized pre-treatments from my truck.

Clear a Path for Hoses

Finally, please clear a path from your driveway or entrance all the way to the rooms being cleaned. My hoses are thick and heavy, and they need a straight, unobstructed line to run from the truck into your home. Move any cars out of the driveway so my service van can park as close to the entrance as possible. Clear any shoes or decorative items away from the front door and hallways. This simple step makes the entire process run like clockwork.

What You Do NOT Need to Do

Now that you know what to do, let us talk about what you do NOT need to do. First, as I mentioned, you do not need to move heavy furniture. Do not try to lift heavy dressers, beds, or massive entertainment centers. I have the professional sliders and techniques to handle large furniture safely, and anything too heavy to move can simply be cleaned around. Second, do not pre-treat stains yourself right before I arrive. It is tempting to spray a spot-remover on a stain to help it along, but retail spotters can set the stain permanently when mixed with the heat of my equipment.

What to Do After the Tech Leaves

After I pack up my hoses, your role in the carpet cleaning process is not quite finished. The post-cleaning phase is just as important as the preparation. First and foremost, you must stay off the carpet until it is completely dry. This typically takes between two and six hours, depending on the humidity and airflow in your home. Walking on damp carpet with outdoor shoes will instantly transfer dirt deep into the wet fibers. If you absolutely must walk on the carpet while it is damp, wear clean white socks.

Second, do not rush to move your furniture back or remove the protective plastic tabs and foam blocks I placed under the legs. If wood furniture is placed on damp carpet, the moisture can draw the varnish or stain out of the wood feet and dye your carpet fibers permanently. Metal furniture feet can rust, leaving orange rings. Leave the protective blocks in place for at least 24 hours.
