What's That Smell?

A musty carpet smell can come from many sources, and most of the time you do not know which one it is at first. Trapped moisture is one possibility, but so are pet accidents, spilled food or drinks that reached the padding, tracked-in soil, or carpet that got wet and dried too slowly.

The smell is a clue that something may be trapped in the carpet fibers, backing, padding, or nearby materials. For homeowners, the right response is to narrow down the source before treating anything. A pet accident needs a different response than a plumbing leak, and a food spill in the padding is different from ordinary tracked-in soil.

Start by Finding the Source

Walk through the room and determine where the odor is strongest. Think about what may have happened in that area: a spill, pet accident, recent cleaning, damp furniture, a nearby bathroom or appliance, or another possible source of moisture. If the carpet feels unusually cool, damp, rippled, discolored, or different from the surrounding area, that may provide another clue.

If there is an active leak or continuing source of water, correct that problem first. Carpet cleaning cannot solve a plumbing leak or another condition that continues introducing moisture into the area.

Helpful Steps You Can Take

If the carpet became wet from a one-time spill or moisture event, improving airflow can help. Open interior doors, run fans or air movers across the area, and use air conditioning or a dehumidifier when available. Keep unnecessary traffic off damp carpet while it dries.

Drying may reduce the smell when moisture is contributing to the problem, but it does not necessarily remove whatever originally caused the odor. A spill, pet accident, food residue, tracked-in material, or another source may still remain in the carpet or padding.

Avoid making the problem more difficult by repeatedly applying household cleaners, soaps, fragrances, or products not intended for the carpet or the particular problem you are treating. Too much cleaning product can add moisture, leave sudsy or sticky residue behind, affect carpet dyes or fibers, and make later professional cleaning more difficult. Never mix household cleaning chemicals.

If you decide to use a carpet-care product before calling a professional, use one specifically intended for that purpose and follow the directions carefully. When you are unsure what caused the odor or which products may already have been used, sometimes the best thing to do is stop treating the area until it can be properly evaluated.
