Can You Clean Area Rugs at Home?
Sometimes. Small, durable, colorfast synthetic rugs may tolerate careful vacuuming and limited spot treatment at home. First check the care label and identify the fiber, backing, and construction. Wool, silk, viscose, jute, antique, hand-made, heavily soiled, or valuable rugs should be evaluated before adding water.
For a fresh spill, remove solids, blot with clean white towels from the outside toward the center, and avoid scrubbing. Do not saturate the rug. Too much moisture can cause dye migration, browning, musty odors, backing damage, or moisture transfer to the floor below. Household detergents may also leave sticky residue that attracts soil.
Steam Lion recommends professional guidance when the material is uncertain, the rug has a backing, an odor keeps returning, or a spill reached the underside. We evaluate the rug before recommending an appropriate method. Steam Lion is IICRC Certified and Professional, bringing 10+ years of professional experience to Glenview, Chicago, and Chicago.
